For years, the composer duo Nyhus & Dæhlin have created artistic responses inspired by encounters with Norwegian folk music archives. Mellom marks a significant milestone in this ongoing exploration, a collection of works that resonate with the echoes of the past while forging new musical paths.
At the heart of the album lies Lokkresonanser, an expansive acoustic work for string ensemble and piano. The piece draws on archival recordings of traditional cattle calls (lokk) and melodies from Østerdalen, Finnskogen, and Glåmdalen. The duo transforms these archival glimpses into a resonant world where traditional aesthetics and contemporary art music meet. The nine string players in the Terjungensemble and Nyhus on piano call out to one another, weaving a rich, layered texture of calls and echoes.
The rest of the album are the four tracks Klunk, Tvo, Søyle, and Lumsk, where the duo revisits material from their own project archive. The textures and expressions of these tracks are rooted in listening experiences with folk music archive recordings, having undergone multiple layers of reimagination, emerging as new music that blurs the perception of time and space.
Mellom delves into the raw and the skewed, the strange, the secretive and the ambiguous, challenging our experiences of time, place, sound, and memory.
